Audio Apps

In the spirit of activating our minds to wander, I have used three audio apps I’ve found to be great tools over the years. Whether you’re managing anxiety, struggling to sleep, or the idea of quiet contemplation makes you squirm, I have three audio apps for you to try.

  1. endel.io is my current goto app. I was drawn in by the minimalist design, completely in black and white. It is a robust app that not only can be an app on your phone, but on my macOS, it can be installed and added to the top bar making it easy to access while working. I have been using the timer as my version of a Pomodoro timer. Not only can I customize the type of audio that helps me create a focused space, but I can also add the timer to keep me on track without going down a rabbit hole and making sure I keep to a schedule. You can use it free for seven days to test it out. After that, there is a fee of $69.99/year. I get regular promos to buy into lifetime status if you figure you’ll regularly use it for over a few years.

  2. bettersleep.com is a phone app I was using before I found Endel. I liked the clean design and vibrant illustrations. They have some unique ways to customize the audio based on one’s needs. As well they do track sleep and record audio sounds while you snore away. I purchased it for a year and enjoyed it while I used it. When I learned about Endel, I swapped instead of paying for two apps that were similar. This app is also a 7-day trial with an annual fee of $59.99/year.

  3. insighttimer.com is the one true FREE app you don’t need to purchase to get value out of the audio. Yes, you can upgrade to a paid which I did once I realized how much value I was getting from the meditation audios and learned that the fee is shared with the content creators. You can even choose to support specific creators directly if you prefer. I have used its meditation recordings for various situations. During COVID, it was a lifeline as I managed anxiety, and there are some amazing teacher audios that have lulled me to sleep. You can choose recordings by length of time, so if you just need a short retreat, anything from 2 to 10 minutes are all great options for a quick reset. If you need a little more care, choose 20+ minute audios that are good for solid afternoon breaks.
